How to Purchase Custom Golf
Clubs Online
Have you ever considered buying a set of custom golf
clubs?
Most people haven't. But consider this: would
you buy shoes without specifying a size. When you buy
your golf clubs off the shelf you will get a standard set in
terms of lie angle, shaft flex, shaft length, and
grip. This may not be the best setup for you.
The four main factors in determining your correct club
fitting is:
- Height
- Arm length
- Hand size
- Swing speed
Your height and arm length will determine your lie
angle. Hand size will determine the grip size. And
swing speed will determine the shaft flex that is right for
you. When buying off the shelf, shaft flex is typically
the only option you have control over.
I recently purchased a pitching wedge
from an custom club builder, to share with you the
process of ordering custom fitted golf clubs online.
I was very impressed with the procedure.
If you already have been previously fitted and know
your specs, then you can proceed directly to the purchase
option. I had not so I chose the option to submit the
information to their club fitting pro. In addition to the
above, information such as age, yearly rounds, ball flight
trajectory, and ball flight pattern are requested.
They recommend that if you are unsure then it is best to leave
your answer blank.
You will be asked what club you use for a shot of 150
yards. This will help in determining the best shaft flex for
you. The higher number club you use typically translates
to a faster swing speed. If you possess a fast swing
speed then a stiff flex shaft will most often suit you
best.
A measurement needs to be taken for the distance from your
wrist to the floor. You need to stand straight with your
arms straight down. If you are alone, you can
stand by a wall and make a small mark in pencil then
measure the distance. It is important to get this
right, and you are recommended to wear shoes while taking
the measurement.
After submitting the form, I received the following
back within about 30 minutes.

I have reviewed your
information, and would highly recommend
the following specifications for your custom
set:
The AT510 model Irons, numbers
3,4,5,6,7,8,9,PW,GW,SW at Standard Length (for
example the 7 Iron will be 37.5"), +1
degree Lie (63 degree lie 7 Iron), and
Stiff-flex Thomas Graphite frequency and
flex-matched shafts.
(Many players who sweep the ball rather than
taking a divot will prefer the AT705 Hybrid
Irons over traditional Irons. Using the same
recommended custom specs above, you can replace
Irons with the same numbered AT705 Hybrid. The
Thomas Hybrids were designed to match the
weight and swing characteristics of each
corresponding numbered Iron.)
I also recommend the following Woods: 3 and 5
built to Standard length
with Stiff-flex Thomas Graphite frequency and
flex-matched shafts.
Go with a 10.5 degree AT-460 Driver at Standard
length with a Stiff-flex Thomas Graphite
frequency and flex-matched Shaft.
All your clubs should be fitted with Thomas
Z-Tred Grips.
Grip size can be a personal preference, but
should typically follow this chart based on
your glove size:

My recommendations were pretty standard except for the +1
degree lie angle. I'm sure my height of 6'2" and the
wrist measurement taken above influenced
that. Armed with my custom
specifications I was ready to order.
Upon deciding to accept the above recommendations, the
ordering process was a snap. The club will be built the
next business day. The following business day it will be
inspected and shipped fully insured. When shipped, an
email with the tracking # will be sent.
Golf is a hard enough game with the right equipment.
With equipment not fitted for you, it's a battle you may
have a tough time overcoming.
While all online custom golf club makers may not follow
the above steps exactly, the vast majority should be
compiling the same general information.
There is nothing quite like the feeling of a solidly struck
ball with the right golf club fitted for your swing.
Good luck.
